Dance and the performing arts have been a way of life for Melissa since the age of three. From that early age, Melissa developed her dance skills in all genres, completing exams in Tap and Jazz and moving on from there to perform in dance competitions at the international level.
In addition to professional dance instruction, Melissa has also choreographed for bodybuilding and fitness competitions, as well as for the Ontario Gymnastics Federation (OGF). Melissa’s choreography for the OGF was showcased during a CFL halftime show at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. Melissa’s competitive dance choreography has earned her numerous special awards, overall high scores, and “Kick It Up” Dance Competitions first ever perfect score.
Dancing is a passion for Melissa and she spends much of her free time developing and furthering her skills as a Professional Instructor. Melissa has actively participated in numerous dance workshops led by extraordinary Artists such as Mia Michaels, Chris Judd, Kenny Wormald, and Everett Smith. Melissa has also upgraded her skills in Tap through instructional classes at the Broadway Dance Center in New York City. Melissa has also recently received her certification with Acrobatic Arts in the Acro Dance Pre-School division.
It is an honor for Melissa to teach and share her love of dance with students of all ages. As a mother of two daughters, she understands the need to provide positive reinforcement and a nurturing environment for new dancers while mentoring the more experienced.
Now Joel is a graduate from Toronto Metropolitan University (formally Ryerson University) from the Performance Dance Program. While at TMU, Joel trained in Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Contemporary, Improvisation, Creative Performance, and Acting and danced in the works of Matjash Mrozewski, Irena Ponizova, Peter Chin, and Vicki St. Denys. Outside of TMU, Joel has furthered his training with Decidedly Jazz Danceworks Summer Intensive, Kenny Pearl’s Winter Intensive, TransFormation Dance Summer Intensive, and Kenny Pearls Emerging Artist Intensive. During his outside training, Joel has worked with dance artists such as Kimberley Cooper, Alysa Pires, Hanna Kiel, and Andrej Petrovic from Akram Khan Company. Joel has presented his choreography twice in Choreographic Works at TMU. In his final year at TMU, Joel choreographed a full-length contemporary dance work titled To Be Determined: A Dance Project which explored the impact of climate change on earths ecosystem through movement, music, text, lighting, and projection.
Joel’s creative practice is inspired by his environment, visual art, and the need for social change. In his choreographic process, Joel frequently works with improvisation and collaboration with the dancers. Joel has also used dance film as an outlet for his choreography. His goal as a teacher is to challenge the dancers and introduce them to new techniques and styles.
HEAR FROM THE HEARTS OF THE HPDA FAMILIES
My daughter just finished her third season on the Elite Dance team and we are so happy to be a part of such a great community. She has so much confidence and her dance has improved so much with HPDA instruction. She loves it here.
